Each year, EA’s FIFA titles release to critical condemnation yet commercial success. This year’s entry is not any different, with EA now announcing that FIFA 23’s launch period represents the biggest in franchise history.
Making the announcement via a press release on their blog, Eric Escaravage, the Global PR Lead at EA SPORTS FC, said “Today, Electronic Arts Inc. celebrated a record-breaking launch of EA SPORTS FIFA 23 with over 10.3 million players within the first week, signalling the biggest launch period in EA SPORTS FIFA franchise history.”
Speaking on this success, Nick Wlodyka, SVP and GM of EA SPORTS FC said “The response from our fans has been nothing short of incredible, and we’re thrilled that our community is playing with their favourite players and teams across FIFA 23 in record numbers.”
Wlodyka continued, “With both the Men’s and Women’s World Cups, and exciting updates to our women’s club football content in game still yet to come, we’re just getting started on providing players with the most authentic and immersive experience yet.”
While unlikely to be the primary reason for its success, FIFA 23 (in collaboration with Apple TV+) includes the fictional team AFC Richmond from the much-loved British comedy series Ted Lasso – an exciting prospect for fans of the show.
With FIFA 23 being the last game developed as part of the EA and FIFA licensing partnership, it is interesting to see it being the franchise’s most successful title yet. What does this mean for the future of FIFA? We will have to wait and see.
