Cyberpunk 2077 is currently in the best position it has ever been and a large part of the recent wave of positivity around the game came as a direct result of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The Studio Trigger anime series became a critical hit and a fan favourite when it debuted in September, but unfortunately, there are no plans for season 2 just yet.
CD Projekt Red Japan's Satoru Honma was recently asked about a second season, to which he replied that there are “no plans” to continue the story at this point: “I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios and create more anime works”, he said in an interview with Famitsu (translated via Google). “However, to avoid misunderstanding, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work”.
Honma added that a season 2 does not exist in any form and isn't being secretly worked on in the background.
Without getting into specific spoilers, if you have watched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, then you will know it is a self-contained story, leaving little wiggle room for a continuation with returning characters. However, the anime was so well received, and Night City is so primed for additional stories, that we could perhaps get a new set of characters in another season or a differently named Cyberpunk-based anime at some point in the future – for now though, nothing has been planned out.
KitGuru Says: The last few months have been great for anime fans. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a huge hit, Bleach has come back after a lengthy hiatus, Chainsaw Man is finally hitting TV screens and returning shows like Mob Psycho 100 and My Hero Academia just began new seasons. Hopefully, at some point, we do get a new Cyberpunk anime, but in the meantime, there's a lot of other good stuff going around.
