Xbox received 33 million reports for moderation in the first half of 2022

As the video games industry continues to rely increasingly on online services and functionalities, there is an ever-increasing need to ensure that users of these services are safeguarded from harassment and harm. Microsoft has now released its first Xbox transparency review, revealing that over 33 million reports were made during the first half of 2022.

Taking to the Xbox Wire Blog, Dave McCarthy, the CVP for Xbox Player Services said “Today, we are releasing our first-ever Xbox Transparency Report, which puts clear numbers and explanations behind the work we do to protect our players and moderate content on the platform. We commit to releasing a report every six months, where we will share updates on progress we’ve made.”

The full report can be found here, however some of the main takeaways from it includes the fact that within the first half of 2022, Xbox managed to issue more than 4.33M proactive enforcements against inauthentic accounts – ‘proactive’ meaning that Xbox managed to catch the negative content and conduct before it reached players.

In terms of reactive measures (meaning in response to player reporting), Xbox made an additional 2.5 million enforcements during the same period, with the 3 biggest reasons being due to swearing, sexual content, and bullying.

In total, Xbox received 33 million reports during the first half of 2022, and while this figure may seem surprisingly large, it is in fact much improved when compared to 2020 – which saw more than 59 million reports in just 6 months.

It is encouraging to see Xbox releasing such transparent reports, while evidently continuing to try and improve their protection measures. Hopefully other companies follow suit.
