The Final Fantasy franchise has sold almost 175 million units

Final Fantasy is one of the most recognisable names in gaming and as such, it is unsurprising to see it being by far the most successful franchise published by Square Enix. The company has now released its latest figures, revealing that the Final Fantasy franchise has sold almost 175 million units since the series’ inception.

As part of its 2022 annual report, Square Enix released updated sales figures on its games and franchises, revealing that its biggest series – Final Fantasy – has sold 173 million units in total since the first game all the way back in 1987, with 9 million units having been sold in the past 12 months.

Final Fantasy isn’t the only major franchise under Square Enix’s wing, as the company’s other main JRPG series ‘Dragon Quest’ has reportedly sold over 85 million units over the course of the past 35 years, with 2 million units in the last year.

The other notable mention is Kingdom Hearts. A collaboration between Disney and Square Enix, the Final Fantasy x Disney action-adventure series has sold more than 36 million units over its 20-year history.

When considering the fact that GTA V alone has sold over 170 million copies, these franchise sales figures may seem somewhat mild by comparison. That being said, for what these three franchises are, none of them hold the same mainstream appeal as GTA, and so their sales successes are commendable and notable.
