After years of substandard Call of Duty releases, the latest Modern Warfare II was expected to hit it big thanks to the success of 2019’s Modern Warfare. Early figures seem to back this up, with Modern Warfare II having the biggest launch ever for a COD on the PlayStation store.
Making the announcement on Twitter, the official PlayStation account said, “Congratulations to @InfinityWard and @Activision on the biggest PlayStation Store launch EVER for a Call of Duty game (including preorders and day one sales).”
This announcement comes in the wake of the statement by Xbox head Phil Spencer which claimed that Microsoft plans to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation for as long as there is a PlayStation console to release the games on to.
While Spencer’s statement primarily responds to the fears by fans following the desired acquisition of Activision Blizzard, it also clearly makes financial sense for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation. It will be interesting to see just how big Modern Warfare II becomes, especially with its two-year post-release content plan.
