Call of Duty Modern Warfare II (2022) represents the first COD title in years to be released on the Steam platform. As such, we are able to see much more transparent data on how the game is performing. After half a decade away, COD’s return to Steam is record-breaking.
Recently, we discussed how Call of Duty Modern Warfare II launched to over 100,000 concurrent Steam players. While this was indeed the case, these figures only accounted for the game’s early access release – in which only the campaign was available.
With the full game out and playable now, including the quintessential multiplayer mode, Call of Duty Modern Warfare II’s launch weekend has seen more than 250,000 concurrent players on the platform (260,667 as of writing) – far surpassing any other COD game on Steam.
For comparison’s sake, the highest concurrent player count on any other COD game on Steam is 2015’s Call of Duty Black Ops III, which managed 63,681 players during its peak. Admittedly, the landscape has changed quite a bit since then, with each year seeing more and more video game enthusiasts come to be, but even when compared to its contemporary competition (Battlefield 2042’s 105,397 concurrent players), Call of Duty Modern Warfare II comes out far on top.
While impressive already, the game is likely to only go from strength to strength, especially once Season 1 releases and Warzone 2.0 drops.
