Meta has been having a few issues with its services recently. Earlier this month, there was a major WhatsApp outage, stopping millions from being able to send and receive messages. Now, Instagram is facing some problems, with millions of accounts getting an unintended suspensions.
The Instagram outage began this morning, locking users out of their accounts. When those affected would log into Instagram, they would get a message saying their account has been suspended. Chances are if this happened to you today, your account isn't actually suspended, and Meta is working to fix the issue.
In an update on the Instagram Twitter account, the company confirmed it is “aware” of the issues “some” are facing accessing their Instagram accounts, and the team is looking into fixing it. The tweet downplays how widespread the problem is, as ‘some' in this case actually means millions of accounts.
As pointed out by The Verge, we can track the number of affected accounts by viewing follower loss on popular pages. For instance, Instagram's own official account has lost over a million followers. Some celebrities have lost several million followers during the outage. Some of these lost followers will have been legitimate, but the current issue with suspended accounts is providing a major boost here.
