The PS VR2 headset costs more than a PS5 console

Sony has been slowly drip-feeding us details on the PlayStation VR2 since the start of the year. Over the summer, we finally got a step closer to launch with the announcement of the first PS VR2 games. Now, Sony has announced that the new headset will be available as of February 2023, but it will cost more than a PlayStation 5.

The PlayStation VR2 headset is launching on the 22nd of February with a $549.99 price tag, or £529.99 here in the UK. The headset will ship with a pair of Sense controllers and headphones, but if you want a charging station for the controllers, it will cost you an extra £39.99. Pre-orders for the headset will begin on the 15th of November, and pre-orders for the first PS VR2 titles will also go live around the same time.

The PS VR2 headset is a significant upgrade over the original and rivals high-end PC VR headsets. The headset has a 4K OLED display with HDR, a 110-degree FoV, 120Hz, eye-tracking sensors and an array of cameras to track movement and controllers.

In addition to announcing the headset launch, Sony also announced a bunch more PS VR2 games, including The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, Pistol Whip VR, Hello Neighbour: Search & Rescue and more.

While the PS VR2 headset has a huge spec upgrade, PSVR1 titles aren't compatible with the new headset, so if you adopted Sony's previous iteration, you are going to have to upgrade to a PS5 at £500, then buy the headset for an additional £529.99 and then buy all new games to play, making the jump a very expensive one.

KitGuru Says: Given the specs, I expected the PS VR2 to be expensive, but I did at least think it would be a little cheaper than the PS5 console.
