While the announcement of the RX 7000 series and new RDNA 3 architecture stole the show during AMD's presentation, the company also announced the latest updates to FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). FSR 3 is set to debut next year, while FSR 2.2 is the latest update for the existing algorithm, arriving next week.
Starting with FSR 3, it has to be said details are very light on the ground right now. AMD announced that the technology will make use of ‘Fluid Motion Frames', and we were shown a brief clip of the technology in action using the Unreal Engine 5 City Demo, with apparently huge performance gains on offer from the new technology.
It's not clear exactly what ‘Fluid Motion Frames' means, but it's possible it could be similar to the frame generation aspect of DLSS 3, especially considering the new RDNA 3 GPUs do now have AI Accelerators built into the Compute Units. AMD would not confirm at this time whether or not FSR 3 will leverage AI acceleration, but I think it's a good bet that it will. That could mean it will only run on RDNA 3-based GPUs, or at least operate with better image quality on RDNA 3 than with older GPUs, but right now that is purely speculation.
FSR 3 is set to arrive at some point in 2023, so we look forward to taking a closer look at the technology then.
More immediate is the announcement that FSR 2.2 is arriving on November the 8th in Forza Horizon 5. This update is meant to further reduce temporal ghosting artifacts and other enhancements ‘that are designed to improve visual quality.' It will also be available on GPUOpen ‘soon.'
