Sonic Frontiers is “the cornerstone of future Sonic games” says head of Sonic Team

Sonic the Hedgehog has had MANY ups and downs over its 30-year history, but with Sonic Frontiers, it seemed as though Sonic Team and SEGA were betting big on the open-zone title. With the game officially out and a commercial success, the head of Sonic Team has now reiterated that Frontiers serves as “the cornerstone of future Sonic games.”

In a recent interview conducted by ‘sector.sk’ the head of Sonic Team – Takashi Iizuka was asked about the future of Sonic the Hedgehog games in the wake of Sonic Frontiers, with him responding:

“Just like Sonic Adventure, our goal for Sonic Frontiers was to create a game that would be the cornerstone of future Sonic games. It is a brand-new approach for the franchise, but we have been conscious to honor Sonic’s roots as well – the game still needs to feel like a Sonic game.”

This isn’t the first time for Iizuka to make such a claim, but it is encouraging to see him reiterate this message following the release of Sonic Frontiers – and not just ahead of its launch.

Sonic Team have been known to be somewhat too reactive to fan feedback in the past, not allowing their game concepts time to improve and evolve over multiple titles. As such, it is encouraging to see that the next game from Sonic Team will build upon the many good elements that Sonic Frontiers has – while hopefully changing what didn’t work as well.
