Report claims PS5 ‘slim’ arriving in 2023

In every console generation, we eventually see smaller and slimmer redesigns. With the upcoming PS5 revision, we could see Sony move away from the disc and digital versions of the PS5 we've seen so far. Instead, Sony would offer a detachable disc drive for the console, which could help cut down on production costs. 

Back in September, Insider Gaming reported that Sony was planning a new PS5 revision with a detachable disc drive, which would “completely replace” the disc and digital PS5 consoles that launched in 2020. Instead of selling separate disc and digital versions of the console, Sony will be able to build just one PS5 chassis, and then users can opt to pick up the bundle with the disc drive, or they can save money on their initial purchase and pick up the disc drive at a later date.

Now a few months later, The Leak has corroborated this report, claiming that the new PS5 will arrive in 2023, and while it will be a slimmer model, Sony apparently has no plans to officially call it the ‘PS5 Slim'.

Since launch, Sony has struggled to keep up with demand for its current-gen console, with the system often being out of stock even two years later. The new revision would allow Sony to focus its manufacturing resources on one PS5 SKU, with a separate supply line for the detachable disc drive. This should allow Sony to make more units to better meet demand in 2023 and beyond.

KitGuru Says: A detachable disc drive might sound a bit silly, but if it cuts down on production time and increases stock, then I think this will end up being a welcome change. Still, we have yet to see what this looks like, but we would expect Sony to have an elegant solution in place so the attached disc drive doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
