BioWare has been quietly working away on a new Mass Effect game for a while now, having assembled a veteran team to begin preproduction back in 2020. Now two years on, BioWare has given us another update, just in time for N7 Day.
For those out of the loop, N7 Day is a yearly community event where Mass Effect fans come together to celebrate the series. We don't always get official news on N7 Day, but every once in a while, BioWare does like to chip in. This year, we are getting an update on the status of Mass Effect 4 (unofficial title).
In a blog post, BioWare confirmed that ‘the next Mass Effect game' has been making its way through pre-production “very well”, in part thanks to a team comprised of Mass Effect franchise veterans. According to the post, BioWare has been “crafting new characters and locations”, which may put a dampener on rumours that Shepard is going to return for a new trilogy.
BioWare attempted to get a new Mass Effect trilogy off the ground back in 2017 with the release of Mass Effect Andromeda. Unfortunately, that game launched with numerous issues and didn't live up to the quality bar that fans expected, leading to poor reception. Shortly after, EA disbanded that team and put Mass Effect on ice for a while. BioWare picked the franchise back up in 2020 and began planning for the next game in the series.
With Mass Effect 4 still in pre-production, and most of BioWare focusing on getting Dragon Age 4 ready, we are unlikely to get a full reveal for the next Mass Effect any time soon.

KitGuru Says: We're still some ways off from seeing Mass Effect return, but BioWare is laying the groundwork. Hopefully this time next year, Dragon Age 4 will be on its way out and we can start really looking forward to the next Mass Effect.
