Sonic Frontiers nearly doubles concurrent players compared to previous games

After 5 years of waiting, a brand-new Sonic the Hedgehog game has finally come to fruition. Sonic Frontiers has taken the series in a rather new direction – and it seems to be paying off, with the Blue Blur amassing a concurrent player count on Steam nearly double that of any other previous Sonic title.

With Sonic Frontiers now having been out for a week, we are able to see just how well this bold new direction is going for SEGA. Though so far we only have PC figures, SteamDB has revealed that Sonic Frontiers amassed a peak concurrent user count of 19,181 players.

While this may seem relatively low – especially when compared to the likes of Modern Warfare II and its 250,000+ concurrent users – 20k concurrent users represents almost double that of the next-best performing Sonic title (Sonic Mania with 11,937 users). Furthermore, Sonic Frontiers is an exclusively single player game, and so concurrent user numbers are typically lower as a result.

Sonic Frontiers is available on pretty much every currently supported system, including PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and of course PC, meaning that the current available data only represents a small fraction of the total player base.

Regardless of its commercial performance, Sonic Frontiers has certainly seemed to please fans of the hedgehog, and so it will be interesting to see the long-term performance of the game.
