Over the years, video game development has shifted somewhat to feature much more heavy use of motion capture technology for games. One company known for its performance capture feats is Sony/PlayStation, with the console manufacturer said to have helped with the development of the upcoming ‘The Callisto Protocol’.
Striking Distance Studios is a new company with The Callisto Protocol being its first project. As such, it seems the studio turned to Sony for help with the game’s cinematics and motion capture, where in response to ‘Zuby_Tech’ on Twitter who said “The Callisto Protocol Used PlayStation's Motion Capture Studio!” former director and studio head at Sony's Visual Arts Services Group – Michael Mumbaur – revealed:
“It wasn’t just the use of the mocap studio. They contributed quite a lot to cinematics and more. Going to be a banger.”
For the uninitiated, this isn’t the first time that a non-Sony developed game has used the company’s motion capture studio, with the likes of Titanfall, Resident Evil Village and so many more taking advantage of Sony Visual Arts Services Group’s facility.
Motion capture is neither cheap nor easy, and as such, it is nice to see Sony continuing to allow others to use its technology – making games better and more immersive as a result.
