God of War TV show officially greenlit by Amazon

Back in May of this year we reported that a God of War TV show was in the works at Amazon for its Prime Video service. At the time, little else was known. Finally, Amazon has officially announced the project, revealing that “God of War is coming.”

Discussing the announcement that a God of War TV show is on its way, Vernon Sanders, head of global television at Amazon Studios, said (via The Hollywood Reporter) “God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will captivate our global customers as much with its expansive and immersive worlds as its rich storytelling. We are honored to share in the adventure of exploring the God of War mythology in such a momentous way with Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studio.”

The show has been in development for over 9 months now and will follow the plot of 2018’s God of War, with the show’s description reading as follows:

“When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”

It will be interesting to see how faithful the show will be to the games, or whether it will deviate to include cut content and more. We will have to wait and see. Fortunately, the God of War TV show will have many familiar faces from Sony Santa Monica attached as Executive Producers, including Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang and Jeff Ketcham – so the show is hopefully in good hands.
