New details about AMD Radeon RX 7900 series GPUs emerge

Last week AMD officially unveiled its RDNA 3 GPU architecture and the first graphics cards to utilise it – the RX 7900XTX and the RX 7900XT. While we got a good amount of information last week, there is still more for AMD to share, as shown by new reports.

In the following days after the Radeon RX 7900 series GPU announcement, new details about the upcoming cards have come to light. We learned from PCWorld after the event that the Radeon RX 7900 GPUs were designed to clock up to 3.0GHz. That's considerably higher than the reference 2.5GHz clock speed, but it's in line with the rumours regarding this spec.

According to Coreteks, AIB partners could only overclock the cards by 3% (about 75MHz) using preliminary drivers. Hopefully, the overclock potential will increase with the final drivers.

Another interesting bit found by GamerNexus is the hidden temperature sensor on the Radeon RX 7900 series cards. Located behind the fan, the sensor can accurately read the temperature of the air surrounding the card. That can be useful for things like 0dB technology, which stops the fans at low temperatures. AMD hasn't confirmed if we'll be able to see the temperature read by this sensor.

In addition, Frank Azor, AMD's chief architect of gaming solutions and marketing, also explained to PCWorld why the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is an RTX 4080 rival. In the end, it all comes down to pricing. It doesn't make sense to compare a $999 GPU to a $1599 one. As for why the presentation didn't feature any RTX 4080 performance numbers, AMD didn't have any back then and probably still doesn't. After all, the card will only release on November 16th.

Azor also revealed a little bit more about FSR 3, which AMD has been working on it for some time and is due for a 2023 launch. AMD is planning for FSR 3 to be supported by additional architectures, alongside RDNA 3, but specifics have yet to be announced.

KitGuru says: We're still a while off from reviews but we expect to hear plenty more about the upcoming RX 7900 series graphics cards over the next few weeks.
