NieR Automata anime trailer released

Back in February 2022 it was announced that an anime adaptation of the critically acclaimed and much-loved genre-bending Action-JRPG  NieR: Automata was in the works. We later learned that the anime is set to premiere in January 2023. Ahead of this, we have now gotten our first full trailer.

Giving us our best look yet at the upcoming anime, it is clear NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is being made with a lot of care and attention paid towards its source material, with many familiar action sequences and even shot-for-shot recreations of some of the game’s biggest moments. All that said, NieR: Automata’s game director Yoko Taro previously claimed that:

“When I submitted a synopsis for episode 1 that was completely different from the game, it was all rejected. Rereading it now, I think it was all good…!” suggesting that the anime itself might differ quite a bit from the video game – though we know from the trailer that some of the biggest (early) moments will be similar at least.

The adaptation is being produced by Square Enix and Aniplex – the latter of which is owned by Sony and known for producing hundreds of anime from Naruto to Banana Fish. The NieR: Automata anime is actually being developed and animated however by A-1 Pictures – a long-time collaborator responsible for the likes of Blue Exorcist; Sword Art Online; Your Lie in April; Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, and (co-producing) Darling in the Franxx – to name but a few.

NieR: Automata is truly an excellent game and so hopefully the anime manages to capture the many levels of depth held within this series. From what we have seen so far, this might indeed be the case. We will have to wait and see, but it is exciting nonetheless.
