CES 2023: Intel unveils new 13th Gen Core processors for laptops and desktops

CES officially kicks off today with the first round of major announcements. Intel is going first this year, revealing its new 13th Gen Core processors for laptops, including the first 24-core CPU for a laptop, and new 13th Gen Core desktop processors.

Today at CES, Intel officially announced its new 13th Gen Core mobile processors. Not all the SKUs have been fully detailed yet, but at the very top of the pile you will find the Core i9-13980HX, a 24-core CPU, split between 8 ‘performance' cores and 18 ‘efficiency cores'. There will be other Core H, P and U series mobile processors too to fill out the line-up, with H being what you'll commonly find in gaming laptops, with P and U series chips being used for lower-power thin and light laptops.

So what can you expect from the new high-performance 13th Gen Core H-series CPUs? Well, Intel is promising best-in-class connectivity with PCIe Gen 5, and support for both DDR4 and DDR5 memory. Additionally, you can expect up to 5.6GHz boost clock speeds, up to 49 percent faster multitasking performance compared to Intel 12th Gen, as well as the latest enhancements to improve battery life and efficiency.

According to Intel, there will be five times as many HX laptop designs powered by 13th Gen Intel Core mobile processors compared with 12th Gen. As for standard H, P and U series laptops, Intel expects to see over 300 designs from OEMs over the next year, so expect to see plenty of new laptop announcements from companies like Dell, Lenovo, Asus, HP, MSI, Razer and more.

On the desktop front, Intel has also rolled out new non-K SKUs. Back in October, we saw the first 13th Gen Core desktop processors launch, all with the ‘K' suffix at the end, meaning they are unlocked processors that can be overclocked. Now, locked versions of these CPUs will hit the market, allowing OEMs and hobbyists to save money. These new SKUs have 35-watt and 65-watt TDPs, so they use up less power.

Even with the lower TDP in place, these chips offer up to 24C/32T, up to 5.6GHz boost clock speeds and up to 34% higher multithreaded performance compared to their last-gen equivalents.
