Recent Final Fantasy games “unfortunately did not meet our expectations” claims Square Enix

Despite being one of the longest-running and most popular video game franchises of all time, Square Enix has struggled to keep Final Fantasy as relevant as it was during the series’ peak. Despite releasing two highly rated Final Fantasy games over the past year or so, Square Enix has reported that the titles “unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”

Shared by industry analyst/reporter ‘Takashi Mochizuki’ as part of Square Enix’s most recent fiscal report, the publisher revealed that “In the HD Games sub-segment, we released multiple new titles, including major titles such as ‘FINAL FANTASY XVI’ and ‘FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH,’ but profits unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”

While it is commonly known that Square Enix sometimes has unreasonably high expectations for its games, analyst Daniel Ahmad doubled down on Square’s current predicament, stating:

“This is one of the rare cases where Square Enix is being reasonable, as both games really did underperform compared to past entries.”

For context, While we do not have the most up to date figures on either game’s performance, Final Fantasy XVI officially sold over 3 million copies in its first week – though long-term sales seem to have dropped off quite a bit. FFVII Rebirth from earlier this year on the other hand has no official sales data shared for it so far – likely due to its underperformance.

Of course, with FFXVI now finally out on PC and Rebirth likely to follow suit, it’ll be interesting to see how sales fare with the added injection of 100s of millions of potential players.
