CDPR gives an update on The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red is still a long ways off from releasing any of its new projects, but the studio has been doing a great job of keeping everyone updated on the status of its roadmap. This week, we got some surprising updates on both the next Witcher game and the next Cyberpunk game.

In a press release breaking down the company's work so far in 2024, CD Projekt Red provided key updates on their biggest projects – the biggest of which is obviously Project Polaris, the codename for the next Witcher game. Pre-production on the game is coming to an end after two years of experimentation and laying the groundwork for the game. Right now, CD Projekt Red is ramping up the game into full production, a process that will take another several years. However, as CD Projekt Red developers no longer have to fight with their own in-house engine, and have instead moved over to Unreal Engine 5, the process hopefully won't be as drawn out as it was for Cyberpunk 2077.

Speaking on Polaris and the next Cyberpunk game, CD Projekt joint CEO, Michał Nowakowski, said: “Work on Polaris is progressing – its development team is nearing a major milestone which will mark the end of the preproduction phase. The first half of the year was also a busy period for our Boston studio, which is laying the groundwork for Project Orion – a new game set in the Cyberpunk universe”.

This year, CD Projekt Red also released the REDkit, a much more robust set of modding tools for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, allowing modders to generate entirely new content for the game, like custom questlines.

KitGuru Says: Production is a long process, so it will be a while longer before we return to The Witcher universe. I expect the updates over the next couple of years to simply be ‘yup, we're still working on it', rather than anything really substantial.
