Back in September, Tom Henderson of Insider Gaming reported that Sony plans to launch a new model of the PS5 which will be similar to the current iteration, except for the fact that the console’s disc drive will be removable. Ahead of its official reveal, test kits of the console have now been made available – and it is reportedly “flawless.”
Sony currently offers two models of the PlayStation 5: one with a disc and an all-digital variant. This new iteration of the PS5 is said to replace both these prior models thanks to offering a detachable disc drive.
While some feared that this may lead of a compromised design and quality, Tom Henderson has now offered an update on the system, saying:
“Small update on the PlayStation 5 that has a detachable disc drive – I've heard from two people now that the test kit is in people's hands and it ‘works flawlessly’. We should hear more about it officially soon.”
Offering a modular console in this way will mean that those who buy a digital version of the system could easily upgrade to a disc version with great ease and little cost. It will be interesting to see how the console and the attachment look and function.
