CD Projekt Red found itself in hot water with fans due to lofty expectation-raising statements made through Cyberpunk 2077's development. In a recent Polish interview, the company appeared to state that Phantom Liberty, the upcoming expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, would be its ‘biggest expansion' to date, but there is an important caveat that was lost in translation.
Speaking with Polish outlet, Parkiet, CD Projekt Red Investor Relations Manager, Marek Bugdoł, revealed that Phantom Liberty is the company's ‘biggest expansion to date', a quote that swiftly made headlines and was reported on by sites like wccftech. CD Projekt Red PR manager, Radek Grabowski, chimed in on Twitter to point out that in the full quote, Bugdoł clarifies that he is referring to budgets, not content.
CD Projekt Red impressed us all with its two fantastic expansions for The Witcher 3. While Hearts of Stone brought in roughly 10 hours of new content, Blood and Wine felt like an entire second game with a lengthy main plot, new side missions and a whole new area of the map to explore.
With Phantom Liberty, we do know that it will take place in a new part of Night City, so there will be new areas of the map to explore and a new main quest line to play through, set before the ending of the main game. Currently, the expansion is ‘on track' with its development schedule and should release later this year, but for now, there is no official release date.

KitGuru Says: Following on from Cyberpunk 2077's launch, CD Projekt Red does need to do a better job of managing expectations and not allowing rumours to run rampant. Fortunately in this instance, it looks like the company has done exactly that by swiftly clarifying a crucial part of the interview quote – Phantom Liberty is an expensive expansion to make, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will offer as much, or more content than previous expansions, like The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine.
