Bungie was seemingly planning a Destiny 2 subscription for Lightfall expansion

Bungie has already made all of its major announcements for next year's Destiny 2 expansion, Lightfall. However, recent datamining shows that there was one potentially huge change to Destiny 2 that was seemingly scrapped – a subscription option.

As reported by The Game Post, the D2 Datamines Discord server discovered some new strings while combing through the latest version of the game. These strings detail ad banners for a 1-month, 3-month, 6-month and 12-month subscription.

Unfortunately, we don't get much more information than that from the files, but it does seem that Bungie was planning to debut this with Season 20 of Destiny 2, which is the Lightfall expansion launch. However, considering this idea wasn't mentioned during Bungie's Lightfall reveal event, it seems likely that the subscription has been shelved for the time being.

The subscription would have included access to the latest expansion, two new dungeons and raids, and some cosmetic items. It is not known if subscribing would also grant access to previously released expansion content.

Considering that Destiny 2 now has a considerable buy-in cost for those looking to get the game with access to all content, a subscription could provide a more accessible entry point for players. Bungie could sweeten the deal a bit further by taking a look at ESO+, which grants subscribers some premium currency each month.

With all of that said, while Bungie has clearly explored this idea, for now, it doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon and it could potentially be scrapped for good.
