EA confirms it is in pre-production on “future Battlefield experiences”

In a surprise announcement this week, EA revealed that it is shifting strategy and scrapping two of its biggest mobile titles – Battlefield Mobile and Apex Legends Mobile. As far as Battlefield goes, EA's announcement also included an interesting statement, confirming that future Battlefield games are in pre-production.

Battlefield Mobile was announced prior to the launch of Battlefield 2042 and was initially planned to roll out onto mobile devices earlier on in 2022. However, the poor reception to Battlefield 2042 forced EA to reevaluate its plans for the franchise. At this point, DICE has put a lot of work into adjusting elements of Battlefield 2042 and is continuing with seasonal multiplayer content and Battlefield Mobile has been unceremoniously cancelled after entering beta testing in late 2022.

As part of the cancellation announcement, EA did squash concerns around Battlefield becoming a dead IP. The publisher says it “remains highly committed to unlocking Battlefield's enormous potential”. Beyond that, EA says that it is “hard at work at evolving Battlefield 2042, and is in pre-production on future Battlefield experiences” at studios across the globe.

This seems to indicate that multiple Battlefield projects are in the works. We'll almost certainly see a new mainline game, but perhaps we'll also see some more inventive spin-offs.

KitGuru Says: Battlefield 2042 was a missed opportunity, but the game is in much better shape now compared to a year ago. While Battlefield Mobile is dead in its current form, we wouldn't rule out EA finding a new partner and trying to bring Battlefield to mobile devices again at some point in the future.
