Sony hires ex-Apple executive to improve PlayStation Store

The relative accessibility of digital gaming has allowed for far more titles to be published to online storefronts for much less cost than would be required if wanting to do so in a physical capacity. This has had its advantages and disadvantages – with the latter being that storefronts are now inundated with low-quality ‘shovelware’ games. Fortunately, Sony is taking action against this with one of their first major moves being the hiring of a former Apple executive.

In a report released by Variety, it was announced that former Apple executive Ben King had joined Sony as a senior VP of direct-to-consumer – meaning he will be directly responsible for the PlayStation Store,

King released a statement to Variety discussing his new role and how better to serve the more than 100 million PlayStation users, saying: “The PlayStation Store has become one of the most visited digital media stores on the planet. This gives us the unique opportunity to think creatively about the relationship with our users, helping them to unlock maximum fun and joy from the PlayStation ecosystem, while simultaneously creating financial opportunity for our games studio partners.”

King continued, “We have the ability to better serve our community by delivering more personalized experiences, helping each and every customer to discover the perfect entertainment for them, through the right channel, at the right time.”

As mentioned, Sony has previously announced that it would be taking steps to reduce the amount of low-effort titles being added onto the PlayStation Store and this latest hiring seems to be a big step towards getting it done.
