The Last of Us is one of the best games of all time in the eyes of many, with the 2013 stealth-action-adventure title receiving universal acclaim following its release almost a decade ago. Quite quickly following the game’s success a film was announced to be in the works. After years of trying to get it off the ground, HBO announced that it would be adapting the game into a show. Mere days away from its public premiere, reviews for the show have gone live, managing an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ahead of its premiere date on the 15th of January, the review embargo for HBO’s The Last of Us has been lifted to reveal what many are calling the best video game adaptation of all time. With a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is safe to say that the show has successfully managed to adapt the video game into a new medium successfully.
The show has also seen universal acclaim on Metacritic with a current score of 84 based on 26 critics. It is worth noting that unlike games, films and TV Shows on Metacritic skew much lower score-wise, and so achieving the rating that it did is exciting indeed.
Of course, while the show has proven to be a critical success, we will have to wait and see what general audiences think. Luckily, HBO’s The Last of Us is only a few days away, premiering on the 15th of January. Hopefully the show is everything critics claim it to be.
