Nintendo Switch surpasses PS4, becomes third best-selling console of all time

The Nintendo Switch has had a great run since its launch nearly six years ago. Since 2017, Nintendo's current-gen home console has sold over 122.5 million units, putting it ahead of the PS4 in lifetime sales in less time on the market.

As part of Nintendo's earnings call last night, the company revealed the latest sales milestone. At 122.5 million units sold to date, the Switch is now the third best-selling console of all time. While the Switch has now outsold the PS4 and the Game Boy, it still has quite a way to go to catch up to the Nintendo DS and the PS2, which sold 154 million and 155 million respectively.

Aside from the new console sales record, Nintendo also revealed that last year's release of Pokemon Scarlet & Violet was a huge success, despite the controversy around the game's performance. The game sold 18.2 million copies in its first seven weeks on sale, making it the fastest selling Nintendo exclusive so far.

Today, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet sit at 20.6 million copies sold, making this the 7th best-selling game on Switch during its lifetime.

KitGuru Says: Switch sales are starting to slow down, so the likelihood of it surpassing the PS2 seems slim. With that said, if Nintendo turns a blind eye to new hardware and insists on stretching out the Switch lifecycle, it could potentially end up being the best selling console of all time.
