Discord voice chat is finally coming to PS5 consoles

It has been over a year since Discord began its partnership with Sony, with plans to integrate the Discord voice chat software with PlayStation. You could already connect your PlayStation account to your Discord account, laying the groundwork for future updates. Now, Discord voice chat is officially landing on PS5.

Those who own a PS5 and participate in the software beta program can now use Discord voice chat on the console, just as you can on Xbox. However, for now at least, you will need to connect to a call from your phone or PC and then transfer it to your console with the press of a button. This is an extra step that was previously present with Discord for Xbox too, although later updates removed the need for additional devices to join calls.

We don't know if Discord on PS5 will eventually be updated to remove device transferring, allowing users to join calls directly from their console. However, given that this is already working on Xbox, we would expect feature parity with PlayStation a little later down the line.

Here's a step-by-step guide to using Discord voice chat on your PS5:

  • From the PS5 console, connect your PlayStation Network account to your Discord account to grant Voice Access to console.
    • Note: if you’ve linked your PSN and Discord accounts in the past to display what game you’re playing, you’ll need to link your accounts again on your PS5 console to grant the new permissions needed for Discord voice chat.
  • Join the desired voice channel on Discord.
  • From the Discord client (desktop, browser, or mobile app) select the option to Transfer to Console and choose the PlayStation 5 console associated with the PSN ID connected to your Discord account.
  • Press Transfer Voice and use Discord voice chat on PlayStation 5.

Discord voice chat on PS5 is currently in beta, but it should roll out to all users in the near future.

KitGuru Says: Discord has become the defacto standard for gaming comms over the last seven years, and it is nice to see the major console makers bringing Discord in to upgrade the overall voice chat experience.
