Overwatch 2’s campaign will be released “gradually” later this year

One of the biggest changes between Overwatch 1 and its successor is the fact that Overwatch 2 was announced to be getting a campaign mode for the first time. Unfortunately, this campaign didn’t launch with OW2 in 2022, with the team revealing it will instead be released “gradually” starting later this year.

In an interview with NME, Overwatch 2’s game director Aaron Keller discussed all manner of things relating to the free-to-play hero shooter, including the reason as to why the much anticipated campaign mode did not arrive with the game’s launch, saying:

“We couldn’t release all of the content that we were building for Overwatch 2 until the campaign was finished […] We found ourselves saying ‘we’re going to keep withholding content from our players so we can release everything together with our original strategy – the campaign – or we’re going to have to change the way that we think about releasing the game.”

Though no official date was announced for the campaign’s launch, Keller did claim that the story mode would be released gradually, beginning sometime later in the year. That said, Keller admitted that the team is “still finalising” exactly how the campaign will be rolled out.

Overwatch 2 has not had the greatest of starts, with many long-time players complaining about the lack of new content. The campaign mode is certainly a big deal, however we will have to wait and see whether it will indeed be worth the time waiting for it.
