4A Games releases Metro Exodus engine giving modders free reign

Video game mods can help push titles to new heights, infinitely extending a game’s life cycle while also allowing for near endless kinds of content to be added. Typically, developers shy away from releasing modding tools for their games – with a decent selection of notable exceptions. Fortunately, Metro Exodus’ modding scene is about to explode.

Making the announcement on their blog, 4A Games – the studio behind the Metro series – released a lengthy blogpost detailing all manner of happenings, from the effects of the Ukraine invasion to future as-of-yet unannounced projects.

The most exciting news however is by far the fact that 4A Games are releasing their proprietary engine for free to all those who own a copy of Metro Exodus, saying “We've heard your requests for things like mod support and, to be honest, we always wanted to do this, it's just never been realistically possible until now. Over the years, we've seen so many Metro mods or themed levels created with other engines, but now we give you a chance to fulfil all your Metro wishes in the very engine where Metro was born.”

The team continued, “We're thrilled to pull back the curtain and release Exodus SDK for you all to play with for free! To run it, you just need to have Metro Exodus (2019) or Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition installed on your machine. This isn't just simple mod support – we're giving you our full Editor as it was the day we released Metro Exodus, with the ability to create standalone content run from a basic executable.”

It seems as though the tools being shared with players offer more than anyone could have expected, and so this announcement comes as a major boon – especially as 4A’s proprietary engine is actually quite impressive on a technical standpoint. Hopefully more developers follow 4A’s example. The full blog post including a complete breakdown of the tools offered can be found HERE.
