ASRock reveals expansion card that can turn a B650 motherboard into an X670 one

What if you could turn an AMD B650 motherboard into an X670 motherboard? That's already possible, but you won't be able to do it just yet. ASRock developed an AMD X670 expansion card that only works with specific B650 motherboards from the vendor. However, they're not on sale, at least just yet.

YouTuber Level1Techs (via VideoCardz) received a review sample of the B650 LiveMixer motherboard that included an add-in card that promises to turn this motherboard into something equivalent to an X670 one. The X670 Xpansion kit comes with an additional motherboard chipset. When used alongside the ASRock LiveMixer board, it expands its capabilities to match those of an X670 board.

To give you some context, the X670 motherboards come with two Promontory21 chipsets. This B650 board only has one, but thanks to the X670 Xpansion kit, it has another one, the two together can work as an X670 motherboard. As for what the add-in card brings, it has two PCIe 4.0 x4 NVME M.2 slots, three USB-A ports, one USB-C 10Gbit interface, two SATA connections, and a 10GbE port.

It's worth noting that this expansion card is only compatible with select ASRock motherboards, as it requires a separate control line connection and the PCIe connector. At the moment, the add-in card isn't available. According to the reviewer, ASRock is currently seeing if there's any interest in launching a product like this.

KitGuru says: If anything like this ever hits the market, buyers can “upgrade” their boards without needing to buy a new one. Even if they don't change the board's chipset, at least we'll be able to enhance its capabilities. Depending on cost, that could end up being a good deal for customers.
