Since premiering a couple of weeks ago, HBO's The Last of Us has gone on to break multiple records, reaching huge viewership numbers. Now, HBO has confirmed the obvious – The Last of Us will indeed return for a second season.
Many of us assumed The Last of Us would return following on from the glowing reviews for episode one. However, that wasn't quite enough for the execs at HBO, so they waited another week to see how episode 2 performed. That episode ended up drawing in more than 20 percent more viewers than the premiere.

With the series gaining steam with both critics and fans, HBO has now announced the second season, which will also air on the HBO Max streaming service. There is no air date announced at this time, but theoretically, writing and filming could start later this year, in preparation for a 2024 date.
Recently, game director Neil Druckmann stated that while there is no concrete plan in place for a third The Last of Us game, Naughty Dog will work on it if the right idea comes along.
