Shinji Mikami is leaving Tango Gameworks soon

2023 has been unexpectedly big for Tango Gameworks already, in part thanks to the surprise release and critical reception of Hi-Fi Rush. The studio has shipped several new games and established new IP under the leadership of Shinji Mikami, but he will soon be moving on from the studio.

Mikami made a name for himself at Capcom in the 90s and early 2000s, becoming a huge part of Resident Evil's early days. He later moved on to PlatinumGames and after that, he started up Tango Gameworks. Currently, Tango Gameworks is seemingly working on The Evil Within 3, which may have been teased in an easter egg found within Hi-Fi Rush.

If true, The Evil Within 3 will be wrapping up development and released without Mikami's involvement. In a statement published today, Bethesda confirmed that Mikami is leaving Tango Gameworks “in the coming months”.

While we don't know what Mikami will go on to do next, but towards the end of last year, there were rumours that Mikami is planning a new project with people from Platinum and Capcom involved. If there was any truth to that, we'll know more once Mikami joins his next studio.

KitGuru Says: While losing a big name creator is never ideal for a studio, Tango Gameworks has primarily been operating with Mikami in an executive producer role, rather than being directly hands-on. With that in mind, we doubt much at the studio will change once Mikami moves on to his next job.
