God of War TV Show first details released

For over a decade Sony has been trying to bring its many popular gaming IPs into different mediums. Finally, we are beginning to see the fruits of this labour, with the commercial success of the Uncharted film followed by the near-universal praise for HBO’s The Last of Us TV show. Another major upcoming show is Amazon’s God of War – the first details of which have now been shared.

In an interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures Television Studios President Katherine Pope discussed all manner of topics, from her priorities within this role to Sony’s lack of a bespoke streaming service. For our purposes however, the most notable question saw Pope being asked “What is some of your favorite Sony IP, titles that you either would like to tackle as an executive or you just enjoy as a fan?” to which she responded:

“There's a lot of really important IP here, we're working on God of War, the PlayStation title, which is still in the early stages. I know the game pretty well, and I'm so impressed with what they're already doing in terms of building out that world and expanding, keeping all the values of the game but also expanding it so that if you don't know the game, it's still going to be a really satisfying show on its own.”

Offering just a little bit more information on the process behind these adaptations, Pope said “That’s always the challenge with adapting IP, I think people somehow think it’s an easier job to develop IP, but, in many ways, it’s harder than coming up with an original idea because you have to know what is core, the most incredibly foundational pieces of the source material. And then you also have to know what isn’t going to work for an entertaining TV show, and you really have to allow it to become its own thing.”

As mentioned, HBO’s The Last of Us has not only managed to be critically acclaimed but has also been breaking records left and right for the distributor. Hopefully, just as much care and thought is put into God of War.
