Activision will be doing something a little different with Call of Duty this year. While the company has confirmed plans for a ‘premium release' in 2023, sources have claimed that this will be an expansion for Modern Warfare 2, giving the game an extra year of life before Treyarch releases its next mainline title.
According to Jason Schreier, who has previously reported other details on the upcoming expansion, Sledgehammer Games is developing a new campaign for this expansion. The new expansion should also include a set of new maps, with new maps and returning favourites from previous games packaged together.
This would be the first time we've ever seen a Call of Duty campaign expansion post-launch. Previously, all post-launch efforts have focused on multiplayer and co-op modes, like Zombies, traditional multiplayer and more recently, Warzone.
Call of Duty's Modern Warfare 2 expansion should be here before the end of the year. Then, in 2024, Treyarch will take the helm with its next title, which will likely be another Black Ops game.
