Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is a new mixed reality game coming to PlayStation and iOS

Mixed-reality games have proven to be quite successful when done right (Pokémon Go, for example). However, as a new genre, achieving popularity isn't easy. Velan Studios has tried it once with Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, but despite being promising, it didn't live up to expectations. Now, they'll try it again with Hot Wheels: Rift Rally, giving much of the same as the previous games with some additions to make it more interesting.

From the team behind Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit, we have Hot Wheels: Rift Rally, a mixed-reality game where you control a real RC car (named Chameleon) that can virtually transform into 140 different vehicles. Like the Mario Kart mixed-reality game, users are responsible for creating the tracks using the included mixed-reality gates.

Users can play solo and co-op with up to four other players, each with its own Chameleon RC car. In addition to racing with and against friends, users can also go to Stunt Mode to make flips, drifts, burnouts, and wheelies to unlock new cars or play challenges in multiple campaign maps, defeating monsters, robots, and noodle carts along the way.

Hot Wheels: Rift Rally is coming to PlayStation 4 and 5 and iOS devices on March 14th, but pre-orders are already up. The standard edition costs $129.99 and includes an RC car, four mixed-reality gates, and a charging cable. There's also a $149.99 Collector's Edition packing a special edition RC car, a limited edition die-cast McLaren Hot Wheels car, and an unlockable McLaren Senna.

KitGuru says: Mixed-reality games have a lot of potential, but whether or not Hot Wheels: Rift Rally will deliver on that remains to be seen.
