In recent years we have seen a greater effort by both studios and publishers to document the development process for a wide variety of games. One studio familiar with such documentaries is Double Fine Productions – having now released a massive 32-part documentary on the development for Psychonauts 2.
Back in 2015 Double Fine Productions partnered with 2 Player Productions to create a series documenting the development of Broken Age. Now, the two have come together once again, releasing a 32-part documentary which adds up to almost 24 hours in length, saying:
“2 Player Productions and Double Fine Productions present Double Fine PsychOdyssey, an unprecedented documentary experience seven years in the making.”
They continued, “Ten years after the release of their flagship video game Psychonauts, Double Fine Productions returns to its most celebrated franchise with Psychonauts 2. Now facing the pressure to produce a worthy sequel, the studio must confront overly ambitious designs, poor morale, technical challenges and financial woes, all during a turbulent span of time for the world.”
The team concluded the announcement by saying “Double Fine PsychOdyssey is the direct continuation of the acclaimed series Double Fine Adventure, and offers even deeper insight into the passion, humor, and heartbreak of video game development.”
Video game development has so many moving parts and as such is a highly complex yet interesting machine – especially viewing it from an outside perspective. It is exciting to see such a comprehensive and in-depth series being offered to everyone for free. The YouTube playlist including all 32 videos can be found HERE.
