Bayonetta is perhaps one of the most curious cases of a Nintendo-exclusive IP. Originally a multiplatform release, the first game’s lack of commercial success would have killed the franchise if not for Nintendo who helped to fund the game’s two sequels. This seems to be paying off as the franchise has gone from strength to strength – with Bayonetta 3 having sold over 1 million copies in under two months.
Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, PlatinumGames revealed that “#Bayonetta3, developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo, is officially a Million-Seller! Out now on #NintendoSwitch.”
While 1 million copies in two months may not sound like a great deal – especially when compared to other first-party Nintendo releases – for context Bayonetta 2 sold fewer than 500,000 copies during its lifetime on the Wii U (its original release) and then took two and a half years to reach 1 million copies on the Switch following its release.
It will be interesting to see how long the game continues to sell for, especially as Nintendo games tend to be rather evergreen in that regard. All that said, Bayonetta 3’s reception was somewhat more mixed than the first two games, and so we will have to wait and see.
