Forspoken gets first major update fixing graphical issues and more

Forspoken has had an unfortunate launch period. Released back in late January the open world action adventure title received quite a bit of criticism from fans and critics alike due to a multitude of reasons. Despite the game’s studio soon set to be defunct, Forspoken is continuing to be worked on, with the game getting its first major patch.

Making the announcement on the Square Enix website, Takeshi Aramaki, the Director of Forspoken addressed fans saying “We’ve been hard at work improving the gameplay experience in Forspoken, and I’m happy to announce that version 1.10 is available now! It’s a major update, so I’d like to give you a look at some of the changes that are included.”

It seems the two main focus points for this update was the game’s graphics and gameplay. At launch, it seemed as though Forspoken suffered from broken implementations of some of its visual tech, including a lack of ambient occlusion. Fortunately, both this and lighting have now been fixed, making the game look a whole less flat and brings much-needed added depth to the world of Athia. Users can now also adjust the game’s HDR values.

On the gameplay front, ‘Focus on Target’ can now be disabled, meaning “pressing R3 while charging a spell will lock on to an enemy, allowing you more precise control over who or what will be at the receiving end of Frey’s devastating attacks”. You can now also change the way lock-on works, allowing you to immediately target a new enemy as soon as the one you are currently dealing with is defeated – meaning you will no longer need to re-engage the lock-on after every single enemy.

The final major gameplay change allows you to enable a setting which will make you immune to your own magic, meaning you will not get staggered by your own spells. Alongside all these changes, under-the-hood optimisations have been made which can help boost performance by up to 30%.

Though it is unfortunate that we will unlikely ever see a sequel to Forspoken, it is highly welcome nonetheless to see that the team are continuing to fix the game’s problems, while also adding new quality-of-life improvements. The full patch notes can be found HERE.
