Atari has acquired Nightdive Studios

Nightdive Studios has amassed a reputation over many years for their work on bringing older video games to modern systems, being updated through remasters and even remakes (in the case of the upcoming System Shock). In a surprise announcement, the classic video game publisher Atari has now revealed that they are set to acquire Nightdive Studios.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Nightdive Studios’ CEO Stephen Kick said “I am very proud to announce that @NightdiveStudio has joined forces with @atari to continue resurrecting the games we love,” with the official Nightdive Studios page then adding that:

“This is a big win for our team! As we look to continue producing high-quality, new, and remastered games that do justice to the original IP; we could think of no better long-term partner than @atari.”

Atari is one of the most well-known names in gaming, especially during the industry’s early years in the 70s and 80s – being one of the primary console manufacturers. Of course, in the decades since then the company has had its ups and downs, being bought out time and time again, with the company leaving the industry to pursue a number of odd endeavours.

One respondee on Twitter shared these concerns with Kick, asking “Is it Aprils 1st yet? I mean I am hoping this aint the same Atari doesn't have a solid name anymore all things considered. Hope this is actually a better company than the one we've seen over the last three decades.” to which the CEO responded with “It's not the same Atari, trust me.”

Time will tell whether this move ends up being a net positive or not, but if this new Atari truly does want to repair its name within the video games industry, then acquiring a studio known for bringing old classics back to life such as Nightdive does make sense. Hopefully this move works out for all parties involved.
