Satisfactory is being upgraded to UE5 bringing ray-tracing and more

Following Fortnite’s upgrade from Unreal Engine 4 to the latest and greatest UE5, we have seen much wider adoption for the new engine, with the likes of Rocket League and others set to make the transition. One other game now confirmed to be getting an Unreal Engine 5 upgrade is the first-person open world factory building title Satisfactory.

Coffee Stain Studios, the developers of the 2019 sandbox title announced via a lengthy YouTube video that they are set to upgrade Satisfactory to Unreal Engine 5.1 when the game’s 8th major update goes live at some point in the unknown future.

Community manager Jace Varlet detailed all of the changes and improvements that fans can expect as part of this update – as well as some of the potential issues (such as the fact that the update will break pre-existing mods).

That said, the switch to UE5 will bring with it some major benefits, with Satisfactory set to see support for ray-tracing via Epic’s Lumen technology (though at least at launch, the tech will not apply to the entire game). Coffee Stain Studios will also be using Nanite for some specific objects based on their own discretion.

Using RT features can be quite taxing on one’s system, but fortunately with the move to UE5 Satisfactory will also see support for Epic’s Temporal Super Resolution – promising 4k-like visual quality while running natively at just 1080p.

Vehicles are also set to see some benefits thanks to the use of UE5’s Chaos Physics system and world streaming will be improved via the new World Partition System. The full list of changes set to arrive with Update 8 can be found HERE, but it is safe to say that especially for a creativity-focused open-world sandbox such as Satisfactory, the switch to Unreal Engine 5 is a major deal.
