AMD pushes back release of Ryzen 7040HS mobile CPUs to April

At CES 2023, when AMD announced the Ryzen 7040HS laptop processors (codenamed Phoenix), the company stated that we would see the first laptops using these chips by March. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case, with AMD pushing the release of the mobile processors to April.

In an official statement shared by Anandtech, AMD has confirmed that the launch of the first Ryzen 7040HS-powered laptops has been delayed to April. According to the company, AMD pushed back the next generation of Ryzen HS processors “to align with platform readiness and ensure the best possible user experience”.

The Phoenix-based Ryzen 7040HS series lineup will include three SKUs with a 35-54W cTDP and boost clock speeds up to 5.2GHz. The three mobile CPUs are the 6C/12T Ryzen 5 7640HS, the 8C/16T Ryzen 7 7840HS, and the 8C/16T Ryzen 9 7940HS. All Phoenix chips will be based on the Zen 4 architecture and pack RDNA3 iGPUs (760M for the Ryzen 5 and 780M for the Ryzen 7/9) with up to 12 Compute Units.

Besides the Ryzen 7040HS sub-series, AMD's new generation of laptop CPUs also includes the Ryzen 7040H, which should release at the same time as the HS counterparts.

KitGuru says: If you were thinking of buying a new laptop with a Ryzen 7040HS chip, it seems you'll have to wait a bit longer. Hopefully, the wait will be worth it.
