Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine to feature new dialogue technology

Insomniac Games has quickly become one of PlayStation’s golden geese, with the studio using its bespoke engine and technologies to create highly impressive and performant games no matter the console. Ahead of the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (which will likely launch in September), the team is claiming to be using some new “very cool” dialogue technology.

As reported by TwistedVoxel, one of Insomniac Games’ recent Twitch livestreams (focused on careers and programming), saw the studio’s lead engine programmer Elan Ruskin tease some of the tech set to show up in future titles, claiming that “there is some very cool dialogue technology coming out in the next game.”

This is all we have to go on so far, however whatever the tech may be, it is safe to say that it will likely be rather impressive. We have seen Insomniac Games manage to create huge open world PS5 titles which not only run at a silky smooth 60fps but also include ray-traced reflections and even fancy muscle deformation tech.

2018’s Spider-Man saw Peter Parker actor Yuri Lowenthal record all his lines twice based on whether players are actively swinging around the city and fighting crime (using a more strained tone) or whether players are just chilling around New York City (featuring a neutral voice). It is entirely possible that the technology in question expands upon such techniques from the first game – or they could be using AI to write the script like Ubisoft is now doing. Hopefully it isn’t the latter.
