Valve officially announces Counter-Strike 2

After weeks of leaks, rumours and some direct teasing from Valve developers, Counter-Strike 2 has been officially announced. The game won't be launching quite as soon as we expected, but it is set to release this summer.

Today, Valve officially announced Counter-Strike 2, putting to bed rumours that this game would be a refresh of CSGO on the Source 2 engine. With that said, Counter-Strike 2 is indeed running on Source 2.

Previously, sources claimed that this update would include improved tick rate servers and even responsive smoke grenades. Valve has confirmed those two features already, with ‘Zero Tick' servers, and smoke grenades with upgraded dynamic volumetric fog effects to improve realism.

Counter-Strike 2 will also include overhauled maps and beyond that, all of your CSGO items will carry over to the new game. Counter-Strike 2 will also be a free upgrade for all owners of CS:GO.

There will be a limited test for Counter-Strike 2 starting today, with Valve set to send out a small number of invites to current CS:GO players. There will be continued testing over the next few months, leading up to a full release this summer.

KitGuru Says: Rather than keeping the CS:GO train moving, Valve is rebranding with Counter-Strike 2, offering a fresh start for the franchise both for regular players and the esports scene.
