We already knew that Sony had a very good year in 2022, thanks to the launches of Horizon: Forbidden West in the first half of the year and GOTY candidate, God of War: Ragnarok, releasing in the second half of the year. Metacritic has now published its annual game publisher rankings and sure enough, Sony ended up in the top spot.
Sony was the highest-rated game publisher in 2022 based on aggregate scores on Metacritic. With 338.4 total points and an average metacritic score of 85.6, Sony held a pretty decent lead over the second highest-rated publisher of the year, Paradox Interactive, which achieved 322.7 total points based on an average metacritic score of 81.8.
Activision Blizzard is third place, with an average metacritic score of 76.5 and 304.8 total points, just barely ahead of fourth place. Focus Entertainment was just a fraction of a point shy of the number three spot with 304.5 total points, although the publisher did achieve a higher average score than Activision at 80.0.
The rest of the top ten is rounded out by Take-Two Interactive, Capcom, Sega, Annapurna Interactive, Humble Games and Devolver Digital. You will find Nintendo in the 12th spot, EA in 17th place, Bandai Namco in 24th place (despite being the publisher behind Elden Ring, a multi GOTY award-winning game), Square Enix occupies 26th place, Ubisoft is all the way down in 38th place.
Xbox Game Studios/Microsoft does not make an appearance on the list at all, perhaps because the publisher didn't meet the scoring criteria. The footnotes explain that publishers with “at least 5 scored, distinct titles in 2022 are eligible”. This may also be the reason Bethesda or Zenimax don't appear on the list.

KitGuru Says: Sony delivered two high-quality exclusives in 2022 so this result isn't too surprising. Now we'll have to wait and see if they can repeat in 2023 with exclusives like Spider-Man 2.
