Nintendo subpoenas Discord in effort to identify Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom leaker

A few weeks back, someone on Discord leaked the entire art book for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, showcasing concepts from the development process, different pieces of art used for the final game, and plenty of spoilers for the adventure ahead. Now, Nintendo is hoping to force Discord into identifying the person responsible.

The leak came from a Discord user, who also shared some of the images on Reddit, claiming to have obtained the images from a friend. The leak already seemed legitimate at the time, but now we have proof that it was real, as Nintendo has applied for a subpoena which, if granted, would force Discord to hand over any identifying information about the user that posted the leak.

If Nintendo can obtain this person's identity, then the next step is likely a lawsuit against that individual. Nintendo is known for its strong stance against leaks and leakers. A few years ago, a series of Pokemon Sword and Shield leaks also led to legal action, resulting in $150,000 fines for those responsible.

As reported by TorrentFreak, Nintendo filed for the subpoena on the 4th of April, asking that Discord hand over the name, address, phone number and email address of the user in question.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will officially release for the Nintendo Switch on the 12th of May.

KitGuru Says: Chances are Nintendo will get its way here, so we'd expect to see more updates on this situation in the months ahead.
