Mature TMNT game based on fan-favourite comic ‘The Last Ronin’ is in development

Last year we reported that a AAA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game was in development, with the announcement coming via an issue of Toy World Magazine. We now have many more details on this upcoming title, with it said to be an adaptation of the much-loved graphic novel ‘The Last Ronin’.

In an interview conducted by Polygon, Doug Rosen, the senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global officially revealed that a video game based on the fan-favourite graphic novel is currently in the works.

For the uninitiated, The Last Ronin was a 2020 TMNT story which took on a much darker tone compared to prior issues. Being set in a “future, battle-ravaged New York City,” all but one of the TMNT brothers have been killed off, with the lone surviving turtle embarking on a journey of justice and revenge.

Like the graphic novel, the upcoming game is said to feature a darker and more mature tone when compared to typical TMNT outings. Rosen also offered some details on how the game itself will be structured, with the title being compared to the likes of 2018’s God of War and its sequel, meaning the game will take on a third-person perspective with some RPG mechanics.

Keeping inline with the story itself, players will be taking control primarily of the lone surviving turtle, with other characters possibly being playable but only during flashback moments.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have amassed a wide audience of both young and old fans alike, and so it is exciting to see that a mature take on the franchise is now set to be presented not just in the comics, but also in video game form.
