The late ‘90s and early ‘00s saw many iconic JRPGs released. One of the more underappreciated titles from this time was 2000’s Skies of Arcadia. Originally released for the ill-fated SEGA Dreamcast, the game is seemingly set to get another chance thanks to a remaster which is claimed to be in development.
As reported by industry insider Shpeshal_Nick (via the XboxEra podcast) “Skies of Arcadia [is] getting a remaster,” adding that “I may have seen screenshots of this Skies of Arcadia remaster” – and then followed it up by confirming the fact that “I’ve got screenshots of it.”
The screenshots in question were not shared and Nick refrained from offering any information on what they saw, meaning it could be as simple as an up-res or could be as comprehensive as something like the recently-released Metroid Prime remaster.
For the uninitiated, Skies of Arcadia was published by SEGA in 2000 exclusively for the Dreamcast. Unfortunately the console did not succeed and as such with SEGA going on to become a 3rd-party publisher the game was later brought to the GameCube in 2003 via a director’s cut known as ‘Skies of Arcadia Legends’. A port for PC was announced at the time, however it was unfortunately cancelled.
The game received high praise upon its initial release and so to see it stuck on generations old hardware is unfortunate. As such, it is exciting to hear that the unique exploration-focused JRPG could be coming to modern systems – though of course we will have to wait for an official announcement.
