Chances are if you've been a new subscriber to Xbox Game Pass in recent years, you've had an opportunity to get one month of subscription time for just $1 or £1. This offer was widely used and has aided in Game Pass growth across console and PC. However, all good things must come to an end.
Microsoft has officially stopped offering its $1/£1 trial offer for Xbox Game Pass. In a statement sent to The Verge, a Microsoft spokesperson said: “We have stopped our previous introductory offer for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass and are evaluating different marketing promotions for new members in the future”.
While this may slow Game Pass growth in the short term, Microsoft recently got some positive news on its pending acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The CMA, which has been viewed as the toughest regulator standing in the way of the deal, recently ‘narrowed the scope' of its concerns and conceded that the deal “would not result in” lower competition between Xbox and PlayStation.
If the acquisition goes through in mid-2023 as planned, Microsoft will have a ton of new content to bring to Game Pass across Activision Blizzard franchises. With that in place, Game Pass should see growth based on its stronger content offering. Beyond that, Microsoft no doubt has other promotions in mind, although they may end up being seasonal, rather than indefinite.
