Gran Turismo 7 set to get 120hz mode and physics improvements in upcoming update

A few days ago we reported that Gran Turismo 7 is set to get an update some time this week, with the game’s director teasing the addition of 5 new cars. It seems the new vehicles are actually the least exciting part of this update, with the upcoming patch seemingly set to bring with it physics improvements, VRR support and even a 120hz mode.

In what appears to have been a mistake, Polyphony Digital uploaded the patch notes for the upcoming GT7 update ahead of it going live, meaning we are able see exactly what is coming ahead of its official announcement – and it’s a doozy.

In what might just be the biggest patch yet, GT7’s impending update will bring with it a whole host of improvements, changes and additions, including:

  • The previously announced 5 new cars
  • Nurburgring Endurance layouts
  • New events
  • 2 new extra menus
  • A whole host of physics changes
    • Suspension physics
    • Tyre physics
    • Aerodynamics
    • Anti-lag system
    • Car initial settings
    • Controller handing changes
  • Adjusted times for Missions, Licenses and Circuit Experiences to reflect the physics changes
  • 120hz mode
  • VRR (variable refresh rate) support

As it stands, GT7 runs at a smooth 60fps and a native 4K with no dynamic resolution scaling. It is unknown whether this 120hz mode will alter any of the game’s graphics or whether it will simply unlock the frame rate and allow for VRR to smoothen out any frame spikes. Regardless, this update is huge and highly exciting. Hopefully Polyphony Digital officially offers additional details on this update soon.

While on the surface a relatively simple change, I argue that Treyarch intimately studied DOOM and the past 30 years of first-person shooter evolution to craft one of the most satisfying gameplay systems yet.
